What mom really wants for Mother’s Day

Mother's Day

What does this mom want for Mother’s Day? To sleep in late, go running with my friends, return to a delicious breakfast prepared by my family (in a cleaned-up kitchen), and then to not be interrupted or rushed as I shower and dress.

And, just in case you’re remotely interested, here’s what I don’t want to do: Prepare (or plan) a meal, wash a dish, do a load of laundry. You get the idea.

What about gifts and cards? I love homemade cards and have saved every one I’ve ever received, even though I am notorious for prematurely recycling kids’ artwork. If I had to choose something money could buy, a gift certificate for a massage would top my list. Or perhaps, that money is better spent on dinner at my family’s favorite restaurant.

I wondered, though, if I’ve been writing about sustainability for too long or if this is how other moms feel. So, I shot an email to a group of friends (some of whom wouldn’t be caught dead carrying a canvas bag) and posed the same question.

To sum up their answers: Less stuff. More experiences. Everyone wanted time to themselves as well as quality time with their well-behaved families (no bickering or full-blown fighting allowed).

In short, the gifts that many moms will truly appreciate are light on the budget and the planet (and heavy on gratitude).

Sleeping late was the clear winner. Here are some of the other suggestions that come straight from mothers:

  • Make mom a meal (or two). Breakfast in bed was most popular, but it depends on the woman. If she is the type who wouldn’t laugh over spilled coffee, then it’s best to pick something else.
  • Insist that she take the day off. Walk the dog, take out the trash, or take on any of mom’s regular chores.
  • Accompany mom to her favorite places without complaining. Some ideas: take a bike ride, pack a picnic, go on a long walk, visit a museum, or bring her to a movie of her choice.
  • Let her take an afternoon nap or curl up with a novel.
  • Make her a card. For older children, write her a poem or a letter. My friend Ellyn had a terrific idea: “If I could have anything in the world, what I'd love most is a long handwritten letter from each of my children (21 and 19) about what they are thinking, feeling, and looking forward to at this point in their lives.”
  • Buy her a gift certificate from her favorite spa, yoga studio, or restaurant where she might like to take a friend. Give her a homemade gift certificate for four weekends of dog walking, family dinner out the first Sunday of every month, or family supplied tech support on demand for a year.

If you could have anything in the world for Mother’s Day, what would you most want?

I'd most like photos of my children given to me in frames decorated by them. it's easy to do with simple materials from nearly any craft store.

I would love an heirloom tomato plant that I could then plant in my garden and have fresh tomatoes all summer.

I'd love a thoughtful card from my husband. More importantly I'd really love my baby to stick to her napping schedule and go to bed early! Is that asking too much for Mother's Day?!?!

I would love to spend an evening playing silly board games with my family. Preferably board games that will make us laugh uncontrollably. ;)

Something creative like a skit and a song to start the day! Even better, offer to take the dog for a walk and let me have a little more sleep or a warm bath with my book, that I never get to read ;)

I would love a big backyard swing so I can sit outside on hot summer nights, look at the stars, and chat about what's on my kid's minds.

My young kids and I are starting a new tradition this year of giving the special Moms in our lives heirloom tomato plants that we started from saved seeds in nice clay pots. A great project for the kids and we have fun doing it together. For my mother's day, I would love to spend a care-free day with the family, and probably some free time transplanting our own starts into beds!

Taking a walk on a trail or in a garden with my adult children and just chatting about life with them is the best gift of all.

My boys are 3 & 2 years old. I would love a video of them singing and dancing a song for me. It would be a great keepsake to show them when they are older.

I'd want my husband to help my young children (ages 1-6) to plan a playdate with mom. They would plan to do our favorite family things together, like a swim in our pool, picnic lunch with chocolate desserts, and Dad taking photos of Mom with the kids instead of the other way around!

I'd love to sleep in, eat food I don't have to make or buy, go for a bike ride and play cards with my family.

My ideal Mother's Day would be to have a picnic in Central Park with 20 of my closest female friends -- the ones I love and never get to see anymore because we are all too busy all the time. We'll leave our "crackberries" and/or cell phones home and stay out until dark (no what-to--make-for-dinner anxiety)and then I'll come home, crawl into bed, read my book (still no talking! not a word 'mom' is home!) and then wake up to the next day like a continuation of the one the day before Mother's Day. Just ONE day to call my own!

Would love to spend a day out with the family exploring a new neighborhood; walking around, and having lunch and getting ice cream cones to end my (our) perfect day. Motherhood is about me and my family, without them I would not be mom.

Something creative from my "long-distance daughters" would celebrate the day. From my professional daughter, I'd love photographs or drawings to mark her latest artistic pursuits. From my married daughter with three children, I love a page or two describing "a day in the life of a mother."

My favorite mother's day was when I had just had surgery on my ACL and it was raining -- and it therefore seemed appropriate to stay in my PJs all day. This mother's day I wish to stay in my PJs without the pain. I also want a latte from Peets -- in bed with the Sunday New York Times. I DON'T want anything material, truly. I do want a Thai massage at our house so I don't have to get out of my PJs
