Celebrate Valentine's Day without stuff

Charles Chocolates

You don't have to splurge on fancy gifts to show your partner how much you care. With a little creativity and some advance planning, you can have a romantic Valentine's Day that's all about celebrating your relationship (not simply accumulating more stuff).

Here are some new twists on old standbys (all are light on the planet and most are easy on your wallet). Choose between DIY versions and store-bought in each category.

Massage

Chocolate

Flowers

  • Team up with your kids and create a floral watercolor or collage for mom or grandma.
  • Sign up for a flower share at your local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program and your loved one will think of you every time she or he picks up these fresh, local flowers. Or give your honey one fresh flower a week for... a month? or two? You decide. Look for buds that are organic or fair-trade certified

Poem

  • Write a poem. Not your thing? Copy one by hand. Visit Poetry Daily for American poetry or search for classic love poems from the likes of Whitman, Cummings, and more at Poetry Foundation.
  • Buy a poetry book and read some poems out loud. (Or, for a no-cost option, borrow from the library.)

Treasure

  • Have a V-Day date night at the museum and check out the ancient coins and other priceless treasures.
  • Pick out interesting or quirky vintage coins at your local flea market, drill a hole at the top, and string onto silk thread. (You can often find coins with holes already in them.)

These are all great frugal ideas! I have been racking my brain looking for the perfect gift for my boyfriend, and I think I found it. I found this great site — http://www.my-song.ca/alps/vday/sales! You go on and make a personalized love song — I had a great time putting the song together. It’s completely personalized, and so cute! It’s something I know he won’t forget for a long time. Great site, thanks for the ideas!

Finally some non-commercialized Valentine's Day advice! All suggestions are great for those of us who have more important things to spend our hard earned dollars on than over-priced items. Sometimes really practical things make the best gifts. My husband stood in 5 below zero weather in an ice storm for 3 hours one Valentine's Day fixing my car without complaint. That's the best gift I've ever received! It really takes devotion to do stuff like that. Valentine's Day isn't about how much money you can dump on something that's going to sit on a shelf; its about showing love.

The commercialization of Valentine's is the same thing that goes on at Christmas. I think people should express love on an ongoing basis and with things that have meaning to each person. Love should not be expressed relative only to a gift. When you are in a long relationship, getting gifts becomes a tedious chore, like cleaning the toilet.

Every year we have a "date night" at home. My husband and I cook a feast for us and the kids, we eat then all sit down and watch a movie together. After the movie, the kids spend the night with my parents and me and my husband get some "alone time" Total cost: about 20 bucks.
