The best holiday shipping deals

Consider shopping online instead of making a trip to the mall this holiday season.

You'll save time (on driving, parking, and waiting in line) and money (it's easier to comparison shop online).

It's a lot less stressful since you don't have to deal with crowded stores.

Purchasing something on the Internet is more efficient than a dedicated car ride to the store, so shopping online is good for the environment too.

One downside to online shopping is that shipping costs can add up quickly. Luckily, several mainstream retailers, such as Apple, Kmart, and Nike, are offering sweet shipping deals this year.

Most of the free shipping offers are based on ground shipping, a plus for the planet as well as your wallet since sending a package by plane emits eight times more carbon dioxide than sending by truck.

These deals will get you started:

Looking for more deals? The offers above are just the tip of the iceberg.

Check out FreeShipping.org, FreeShippingDeals.com, and CouponClock to find additional deals and coupons. Keep in mind that many retailers offer one day only or limited time deals so it's worth checking back.

The greener thing to do would be to support your local businesses instead of buying exclusively from megacorporations

I think the emissions really depends on the truck you are referring to. I cant believe that driving one of those smoking, stinking (FedEx or ups trucks) across the country with a handful of packages in it be anymore efficient than loading thousands of packages on a plane and having it there in 8-10 hours vs the 5-6+ days of being on the road. I know for a fact that most the companies that use long-haul trucking (across state lines) register their trucks in the state they have an office in with the lightest (easiest to pass) emissions tests or they register them in an area that does not require emissions testing. And I know a lot of places don't require emissions testing on diesel vehicles. So what if this particular trucks valves are not seated properly? It burns A LOT of oil and smokes up a storm. Not to mention, the planes are going to be flying with or without "your" package, people are using them also, they don't charter a special flight to get your package from New York to California. They throw it on one already headed there.

Very few trucks are on the road 5 to 6 days. Most freight is shipped via rail. They load the trailers onto trains.

If you have to order something online, consider bulk shipping everything to a designated friendly neighbor (or you could be the friendly neighbor). My neighborhood friend and I enjoy shopping at the same online stores so we submit ONE online order (which usually helps us get to the minimum purchase requirement for free shipment) and have the items shipped to ONE of us (we pick up or drop off the items, the next time we see each other). It's CONVENIENT, CHEAP and ECO-FRIENDLY. www.eco-friendlyliving.com
