Turning the tables on junk-mailers

credit cards photo by AFP

If you have one credit card, you probably get tons of offers for more in the mail. I sure do. Who needs all that junk? It's a waste of paper and time sorting through it all.

Green living guru Danny Seo has a wicked little idea for disposing of those unwanted missives.

Open up the offer and take out the postage-paid envelope. Take all the junk the credit card company sent you, and stuff it into that return-to-sender envelope. Pop it back into the mail. The company paid that postage, so it's paying to receive its own garbage back!

Maybe if enough people did this, credit card companies would think twice about spamming us with endless offers for cards we don't need.

Of course, you can also try to get off the lists in the first place.

Four of the major consumer credit reporting companies who are part of the offer-generating process have a free opt-out service. Register with that site, and in a few months, you'll see a decrease in your credit-card junk mail.

I signed up early this year, and I do receive fewer offers. But they're not completely eliminated by any means. So I'll be returning some letters to sender from now on.

i put them all in a pile, every3 mos or so, i open them all, tear off my name and address, put this pile in the shredder, throw the rest in the recycling bin...you should see the pile...it took almost 1/4 of the blue bin...and that's only for 3/4 mos!!! i will try the DO NOT MAIL LIST, then the mail back envelope...because ENOUGH is ENOUGH..and all this talk about paper or plastic..i bought and use the reusable bags for my groceries, recyle the plastic bags every which way...but this junk mailhas got to stop. thnak you for listening.

We need to do something to curtail the marketing tactics of these companies. If they did not spend so much on marketing perhaps they could stop overcharging us in interest and late fees! Most of the offers I get are not postage paid. Those which are will be returned. I'll try any idea that will stop this junk mail! Perhaps I can find my bills and pay them in a more timely manner then. Any other ideas?

Its more fun to take the junk from inside the competitors juck mail and send it back in anothers free postage envelope. Such as Chase's junk mail and send it to American Express and so forth. Just take out personal data.

The mailer does not have to pay for the brick or any other ridiculous stuffing you pile in there. See USPS DMM 507 9.4.6 Intentions of the Permit Holder: "BRM may not be used for any purpose other than that intended by the permit holder, even when postage is affixed. In cases where a BRM card or letter is used improperly as a label, the USPS treats the item as waste." Way to go you Birkenstock, Berkeley idiots.... you are expending more energy waste at the post office and screwing those union postal employees of their retirement since the USPS doesn't intercept this problem until it gets back to the original mailer's postal station. Yahoo should be ashamed that they are promoting this action. It is not well thought out. Yahoo ought to watch themselves since they are similar purveyors of unwanted solicitations through email, ad banners, and pop ups. You likely respond to more "junk mail" offers than you actually realize. Mailers continue to mail as long as the medium is profitable. Direct mail is the easiest form of advertiding to measure. "Junk Mail" defrays costs and enables the post office to provide daily service. Big drops in junk mail will cause the post office to cut back delivery days.

Here's another idea that I heard about,Take the pre paid postage envelope, stuff it with the offers and then get a brick and wrap it up like a package (if not the post office won't deliver it) tape the stuffed envelope to the brick and mail it back to them. Not only will they get the hint, they also have to pay for the postage.

The idea of simply returning the junk in the postage-paid envelope is too tame. Take the postage paid envelope and tape it securely to a brick. Send that to the junkmailer. The junkmailer must pay the fee associated with the mailing. A few of THOSE and the junkmailer is out of business. Sic Semper Junkmailus.

If you tape a "Business Reply Envelope" on a larger envelope, box or brick, then the Post Office has to dispose of it. Businesses only pay for what fits in the envelope. Anything larger than that that requires a "Business Reply Label". Then again, who cares, you worked harder and feel better than you would had you done it the right way.

Nothing new here. That bit about sending it all back in their own postage paid envelope? My Mom has been doing that for at least 15 years.

SEND HEAVY JUNK MAIL IN RETURN: Take a telephone book. Wrap it up for mailing. Then glue the junk mailer addressed envelope on the front of the package. Mail the sucker.

lots of good suggestions and ideas. Guess my biggest concern is the wastage of paper, realizing how many trees we lose to do our advertising. Guess we have to consider ourselves blest to living in a country, where we have freedom of press and the right to share our thoughts with other people. God Bless the USA and our postmen!! Babe :)

Real smart idea, make the company pay for extra postage. Who do you think they will pass that cost on to. I'd bet your credit card company will get hit by this too. No, I do not work for, own, or have stock in any credit card companies
