Swimming pool made from dumpsters

We've heard of dumpster diving, but is there really such a thing as dumpster pool diving?

Surprisingly, the answer is yes. An H-shaped pool made out of three re-purposed dumpsters sits in the middle of an old lot in an industrial neighborhood of Brooklyn.

The pool, which opened in early July, was created by Macro Sea as a test pilot for a larger strategy that involves breathing new life into old American strip malls.

The design firm's vision: To buy up underused strip malls and turn them into vibrant neighborhood communities where anyone can shop, eat, swim, watch outdoor movies, hear live music, and just get together in cool outdoor and indoor spaces.

The Brooklyn swimming pool, dubbed the "lo-fi country club" by Macro Sea, is an impressive first step. The pool took 12 days to construct. The dumpsters, which weren't being used because of the slow down in construction projects, were cleaned and painted. Rough edges were sanded down. They were then equipped with plastic liners, sandbags (for soft walking), and tarps before being filled with 19,000 gallons of chlorinated water.

You can watch a video to see the whole process from start to finish. Here's a fun blog post about creating your own dumpster pool or hot tub.

Part of the charm of the pool is that it is such a delightful and unexpected surprise. The pool itself is surrounded by barbecues, cabanas, a bocce ball court, and more, so it's the perfect gathering space for pool parties, movie viewings, and other summer events.

The one downside is that all events are private at the moment. "As cool as the pool is, it's only a tiny part of what's to come," says Alix Feinkind, Macro Sea's creative director.

What's the next step for Macro Sea? A strip mall in Atlanta. Stay tuned. The project is sure to be another creative way to reuse and re-purpose both space and objects. A plus for both local communities and the planet.
