Nine fairy penguins have been brutally killed in the past two weeks in Manly, a Sydney beach suburb that is home to a colony of about 120 tiny penguins.
What is killing the furry, cute animals remains a mystery, although foxes and wild dogs are the main suspects. The National Park and Wildlife Service is waiting for results of DNA testing and autopsies.
In the meantime, the main goal is to do everything possible to protect the rest of the penguins, already considered an endangered species by the government. All of the predictable steps have been taken. Fox bait traps have been set, and residents have been asked to keep dogs on leashes or locked up.
A small community volunteer-group, which has been out patrolling beaches at night and looking out for the tiny penguins for the past few years, has stepped up its efforts because of recent events.
However, the parks service has also set up a spy-like protection operation. Snipers armed with rifles and night-vision goggles have also been called in to stand guard over the world's smallest penguins (standing at about 15 inches tall) while investigators search for the killer or killers.
