Get paid to recycle your cell phone

OK, 'fess up: how many defunct cell phones do you have in your junk drawer?

The average American replaces his or her phone almost once a year, and that means every year more than 100 million cell phones go to the drawer or the dump, and that's not good at all.

You've certainly seen cell phone drop-off points at various electronics and office supply retailers, but now there's a way to dump your old phones and get paid-at least a little-for them.

Check out Flipswap, an online service that gives you an instant estimate of the value of your old phones. All you have to do is print out the pre-paid shipping label, send in the phones, and wait for your check to arrive. (You can also choose to have the money sent to one of several charities listed on the site.) Just go here to start the process.

When I looked at the site, I saw trade-in values ranging from $4 for some old clunkers to more than $100 for fairly new smartphones and PDAs. You wouldn't want to leave $100 sitting in your junk drawer, would you?

So far, Flipswap claims to have processed about 734,000 phones. That's a lot in raw numbers but hardly any percentage-wise. Only 99 million to go.

Soldiers don't have cell phones in war zones. My brother just went to Iraq and could not take his cell phone.

This new reCommerce industry is growing fast, and there are lots of different options out there for recycling cell phones and other stuff. I work for Gazelle.com, where people can get cash for or recycle all types of electronics: cell phones, laptops, mp3, cameras etc. For some people, store credit is great. Others want different choices, so we offer a bunch of payment options: check, paypal, gift card, even donation to a charity. Whatever option people use for their old gadgets is better than throwing them away or keeping them in a drawer.

I send mine to Cell Phones for Soldiers. Their site is http://www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com/ They'll pay the postage but I send them a check with every phone I send them to help cover expenses. There are many soldiers that can't afford to call home and this helps them keep ion touch. I had a few soldiers that were helped by this program.

Best Buy also has a similar program. Granted, you only receive an online voucher credit, but i'd rather shop at Best Buy than some of these other online stores. I also received about $6 more for my trade in than i would have with this site.

As far as phones for soldiers, the majority of American phones wouldn't work anywhere else anyway. Not many people have a need for more expensive tri- and quad-band phones when they rarely leave their own town.

You can sell your phone back to Best Buy -- they buy lots of different electronics items -- see Trade In Center at the bottom of their home page. They send the money on a Best Buy gift card. They offered me more money for my phone than Flipswap!

WARNING!! Dont use flipswap at all. It has been a horrible experience. I sent my old LG Chocolate to them for 25 bucks that i was suppose to get. I received an email saying they openend the package and no phone was in there. I sent an email to customer service twice and have yet to get a response. I asked for pictures of the box i sent it in and the details possible still no response. This has been dragging on for 6 weeks now. Piece of crap company dont use!!
