Amazon fights a battle against wrap-rage

How many boxes has Amazon sent you over the years? And how many boxes were inside those boxes? America's leading online retailer is finally getting serious about cutting down on packaging waste.

Its environmental manifesto makes it clear that CEO Jeff Bezos is making an effort to do the right thing, not only for the environment but also for his own bottom line:

"We've developed software that determines the 'right-sized' box for any given item based on dimension and weight. As a result, we've achieved a dramatic reduction in the number of packages shipped in oversized boxes, significantly reducing waste; our goal is to always have the product ship in the 'right-sized' box."

Amazon is also fighting back against "wrap rage," that frustration you feel when you simply can't open hermetically sealed clamshell-style packages without stabbing yourself with your scissors. The sight now highlights products with "frustration-free" packaging and invites you to send in your own photos and videos of package unwrapping experiences that have driven you crazy.

"It will take many years, but our vision is to offer our entire catalog of products in frustration-free packaging," Bezos said.

This is a movement I can get behind!

Don't forget that the main reason for difficult packaging is that people steal items that are easily removed from their packaging. It is frustrating trying to get some things out of packages, but it is also frustrating to keep paying higher prices because merchandise is "walking out the door".

Recycling is great, but in support of Amazon, I re-use all the boxes they ship my orders in. I love it, since I don't have to buy more boxes. The puffed up plastic is a big plus too. If I have items to ship that are delicate, those work fine. If I don't use them, I take the platic packing to the recycle place in town. I'm sure Amazon will work to make the recycle efforts a big effort. Amazon is a company that has a big focus on our world. I have total faith in this company.

I agree. I re-use all Amazon boxes. For more compact storring I just cut the tape and collapce the boxes and store them flat in the closet. When I need to ship something, I just find a right size and re-assemble the box again. I do not even remember when I bought a new shipping box last time. I also save a buble wrap and other packing materials.

If anyone needs to be scolded about over packaging, it's drug companies! Ever gotten samples from your doctor? It's ridiculously unbelievable!!

I would much rather like that my product come over packed then it come broken from the company. Also, extra packaging prevents theft.

Making packaging easier to open sounds like it will be easier to sell returns as new, not that Amazon would ever do that.

Does anybody know what to do with the millions of 'foam peanuts' used in packaging? Is anybody collecting and / or recycling that stuff?? I just picture it all in our landfills -agggg. P.S. Don't forget to recycle your gift cards as well. Most cashiers and people just throw them in the wastebasket - again - in our landfills....

I always reuse the boxes and wrapping. I never have to buy either when I need to ship an item. If everyone would do this then atleast it will help alittle. I do agree on the drug companies. Totally a waste....

Being able to reuse materials is nice, but it would be better to use fewer materials in the first place.

The big thing that you all are missing happens in the toy realm. If you have ever had to get a toy out of it's packaging for a waiting child you will know what I mean. First there is the box, then the plastic around the part of the toy showing through the front of the box, then the industrial tape holding down the industrial wires holding the toy just so in the box. It is extremely frustrating and creates a ton of waste. I have three kids and for the last two Christmases I have completely removed the toys from their packaging before wrapping them in a standard box or gift bag. It takes a ton of time and your fingers are raw from all the wires, but the kids can actually play with their toys on Christmas! I saw the new packaging on Amazon before reading this article and am extremely excited! Thank you Amazon!
