EcoGeek video: Incandescents vs. CFLs vs. LEDs

Lightbulbs featured include:

For more details, amazingly geeky EcoGeek Michael Cordingly has created an extremely useful spreadsheet [.xls] for figuring out what lighting option is best for you. You can find out how much it's going to cost you over the lifetime of the bulb, how much carbon it's going to pump into the atmosphere per year, and how frequently you'll need to change it.

If you're curious, the LEDs do best for reducing carbon output, but they'll cost you more over the life of the bulb than a CFL with equivalent light output, even with the decreased energy costs. Thanks Mike!

Wow, I just changed all mine to CFLs too :( Oh well, for the price I paid, $10 for a pack of 4, I still am doing pretty good. I'd still like the chance for that LED one though.

Cool video!!! the "bulbs" used in your presentation has "enlightened" me. OK, that was bad. Anyways, Thanks. Happy new year and look forward to your next presentation! Jimmer jamz1965@yahoo.com

But what about all the mercury in the CFLs?

Succinct comparison. Helped to print the spreadhsheet then watch the video again. Although the Evolux is efficient and has a great lighting effect, doesn't seem terribly cost effective unless I missed something. One problem we have with the CFL is that we can't get them to work well with timers or dimmers. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I agree that CFL's save energy. However, I have found that they cannot be used in closed fixtures, like outdoor fixtures. I have 8 2 bulb lampposts in my yard. 16 40W bulbs. When I installed the lampposts, I installed 16 CFL's of 40W equivalency. Within 3 months they stated to fail and I replaced them as they failed figuring that they were a bad batch. Nope. They continued to fail so I finally replaced them with incandescents. Do they now make a CFL for closed fixtures? My power bill went up noticeably when I made the change. joeebuns@yahoo.com

I've used CFLs for years and while they do last longer than standard bulbs, they don't last as long as advertised or hoped. A very important evironmental impact area you didn't cover is the disposal of the bulbs. CFLs are more hazardous due to the mercury than the other types of bulbs and must be taken to the hazardous waste collection site for disposal. If lead free solder is used the other bulbs can put in the trash. For me a round trip to the hazardous household waste collection site is about a gallon of gasoline. Add that to the lifecycle carbon footprint and CFLs aren't so good. Wide spread use of CFLs is not good for the environment. (bikerider58@yahoo.com)

Wow, nice LED lightbulb. I think I'll make my own one of these days, just for experimental purposes and a few laughs. Apartment will be a little dim though.... p057080n@gmail.com
