Compressed air cars less efficient than electric cars

cac

It has been assumed that compressed air cars are cleaner than battery electric cars,  but the reality is they are quite inefficient.  A new study published in the journal Environmental Research Letters reveals that while in theory compressed air cars seem like a potential competitor to EVs, when it comes to lifecycle efficiency, they just don't make the grade.

The problem lies in the electricity needed to compress the air - a lot of it is lost as heat.  The study concludes that even under ideal circumstances, the compressed air car is far less efficient than a battery-powered electric one and results in more GHG emissions than a conventional gas-powered car with our current coal-heavy energy mix.  Lifecycle analysis showed compressed air lagged far behind electric vehicles in energy required, emissions and costs.

Lastly, battery technology is advancing everyday and is already well-tested and reliable.  Compressed air technology is not likely to advance as quickly or as assuredly, meaning compressed air may still find a home in small urban vehicles, but its reach will be limited.

That maybe true it may be not as efficient, but consider that you can go to any gas station and use the air compressor for 50 cents and be on your way in 5 minutes. On the other hand, the cost of batteries and the charge time really hurts electric cars. Just imagine driving from Los Angeles to Las Vegas in an electric car. What ones was a 3 hour drive, now becomes an over night event because you to charge over night. Hahaha .. instead of Bellagio you end up in Whiskey Pete's in Barstow

Why assume that the technologies to make air compression are not evolving like everything else? New methods are being developed daily. This naysayer negative type of article does nothing to look at advances that are happening. How about combinations of hydraulics and air? Hybrids with ultracapacitors and sterling engines? How about an in-depth article that shows some work.

Yes we need to rethink and reinvent how we produce power to begin with-and yes nuclear may be a big part of that not -only greenies don't want to deal with the waste problem-however new stuff is coming along daily-get out of the old ways of thinking. How about more wave power-how about taking all the energy in vehicles that are coming down a bridge and need to slow down anyway and putting something in the road that captures that braking energy- trains must create huge amounts of energy slowing down-can that go back into the grid. Think out of the box instead of being stuck inside it!
