203 MW wind farm completed in Utah

milford-wind

It's great to see some of the large wind farm projects that were just ideas a couple of years ago become reality. First Wind's Milford Wind Corridor project has just seen the completion of its first phase -- 203.5 MW in Millard and Beaver Counties in Utah, the largest renewable energy facility in the state.

The wind farm consists of 97 turbines and will be able power 45,000 homes.  Southern California Public Power Authority is purchasing all of the electricity generated over the next 20 years on behalf of the cities of Los Angeles, Pasadena, and Burbank.

Construction on the wind farm began almost exactly a year ago.  Over the next few years, the wind corridor will expand to include four more phases totaling over 1 GW of wind energy capacity.

Utah is fortunate to have innovators like Andy Swapp and the "wind kids." Not only for the Milford Wind Corridor project, but more importantly for the minds they have influenced in rural Utah. This project is a feat for many reasons. Utah is a major coal producing state, and has had a long-standing tradition and benfit from the commerce that the extraction industries provide. For that reason alone, there are many who would ignore the effort it would take to get something this significant to fruition. If Utah is in an energy renaissance, then the people in Milford are its Florence, Tuscany. They would be the first to tip their hats to our coal miners, but they are also indispensible innovators at a time when our state and country needs them most. Bravo!!
