U.S. Navy testing biofuels in fighter jets

super-hornet

The U.S. Navy has put out a call to biofuel producers for 40,000 gallons of their best JP-5 aviation biofuel for use in test flights of the F/A - 18 Super Hornet.

The Navy will decide by the end of the month who gets the contract for the test flights.  The choice of company will determine what feedstock will be used in the fuel, but jatropha, camelina and algae are all likely to be in the running and no food crops are being considered.  Regardless of which type of feedstock is chosen, it will be used in a 50/50 blend with petroleum-based jet fuel for the tests.

Ground tests of the biofuel will be conducted at a General Electric facility in the coming months and within the next year test flights will begin, covering at least 15,000 miles. Boeing recently conducted a successful test flight of a 747 using a 50/50 blend of jatropha and jet fuel and saw significant fuel savings and emission reductions.  It will be interesting to see if biofuels perform as well in a fighter jet.

The Navy hopes to have completed testing and approved a biofuel for use in their fighter jets by 2013 and is looking to do the same for its ships in the same time frame.

Is this really a justifiable use of biofuel?

Using Biofuel is not only a great idea but it takes away US from foreign OIL dependency. It should be considered as part of National Security Enhancement. There is no substitute for self sufficiency. My recommendation will be to test as many types of Bio-Fuels as possible. At least 5 types are readily available. Good Luck.

Yes, it is time to shift dependency on petrol and diesel that is becoming hazardous to our planet, therefore to find an alternate would be very much welcome. Mention of using Bio-fuel in ship is under consideration of the authorities. very fine, it is also a welcome news. Mention may be made here that under no circumstance bio-fuel made out of food grain be entertained or used as otherwise, the world already short of food grain will be confronted with a total disaster. I, also understand, the authorities are alert on this issue, but who can grantee that it will not be used? In the world of uncertainty, wherein the country,s president and political party as a whole is accustomed of telling lies to the nation, may as well decide to order the use of Bio-fuel, who knows and can say future it will not happen. Therefore adequate legal measures be made to protect the decision taken once is not flouted later, under no circumstances.

Posted by Tom In San Jose Sun Aug 23, 2009 1:30pm PDT Is this really a justifiable use of biofuel? I'm not a war person by any stretch of the immagination, however, if elements of the world we live in are still in the revenge state of mind then we still need our fighter jets to be functional. I would rather they be powered by a plant based fuel made here than be dependent on oil from someplace else. Perhaps it could be set up that ersonal vehicles should be fueled by algae (my personal favorite) and fighter jets would be powered by Alaskan oil. Ideally someday in the future, probably way way off, we won't need fighter jets any more, but you and I will be dead and gone by then.
