Venice to use algae for 50% of its electricity

The city of Venice has announced a plan to utilize algae in a different way than we're used to hearing about. The Italian city plans to produce 50 percent of its electricity needs from an algae-based power plant instead of fossil fuels.

The water-filled city is turning what has become a nuisance into a renewable energy resource. The city will be producing electricity from two types of algae that are brought in clinging to ships and regularly grow over the seaport. The algae will be cultivated and treated in laboratories to turn it into fuel. The fuel will then be used to power turbines in a new 40 MW power plant in the center of the city.

In order to make the new power plant truly carbon neutral, any CO2 produced by the process will be fed back to the algae.

The innovative project will cost the city $264 million and should be operating in two years.

If you've heard about this already you would know that they're not gonna siphon all the algae from the ocean..They're gonna grow it in tanks or other receptacles that are more effective for mass production of algae...And So this wouldn't really affect the food chain...They're gonna extract the oil from the algae and process it into biofuel..The US has done extensive work on using algae as a source for biofuels...

For all those who think this isn't green because they're destroying an ecosystem (the algae), the algae was introduced by merchant ships and isn't natural. It has become a huge problem in Venice. It's choking out the natural ecosystem and leaving an unhealthy, unlivable ecosystem in its place.

Interesting. With global warming, there might be an increase of unwanted algae & this seems doable. Isn't algae also a possible food source? Wow, energy & food made from green slime. Really makes me want to take the next plane to Venice.
