The radioactive cheese grater

As if we didn't have enough to worry about with lead, Bisphenol A, phthalates, pesticides and mercury, now, a new investigation finds that many common products are radioactive -- even one cheese grater.

A must-read Scripps News investigation found that radioactive waste is being mixed with other metals in scrap yards and recycling facilities, often overseas, and then shipped into the U.S. in a range of consumer products.

The Daily Green urges readers to check out the whole report, but below are the chief findings:

  • Imports aren't checked for radioactivity: The U.S. has no regulations specifying how much radioactivity is acceptable, and U.S. agents don't screen cargo containers entering the U.S.

  • Radioactive materials contaminate U.S. scrap: U.S. metal recyclers and scrap yards aren't required to test or report the presence of radioactive waste, and there is a strong financial incentive for facilities to dump them or mix them in with clean products, since the cost of proper disposal is steep. Facilities in 36 states currently have no option for properly disposing of radioactive waste. A U.S. program designed to collect the most radioactive waste has a "two-year waiting list and a 9,000-item backlog."

  • The scale of the problem or health risk isn't known: No federal agency is responsible for testing, tracking or reporting the presence of radioactivity in consumer goods or raw materials.

Worse, there's very little consumers can do to protect themselves, according to the report. While exposure to low-level radioactivity is a fact of life, there's a scientific debate about the medical implications for chronic low-level exposure, and there's no telling whether or not some common products are delivering doses high enough to cause acute health issues.

This is a "tip of the iceberg" story we'll have to watch.

Maybe it's time to stop being so darn green and start looking at all of the recycling that we do. What's the true cost of recycling, the cost to perform it, the true cost on the environment, the cost on our health, the cost to our economy.

Another day, another health problem. You all can forget about these other countries "cleaning up the radioactive waste". ( It would cost BILLIONS !!) So forget it. It would be nice if we could make every product here in the US but people who work in factories ( although I BELIEVE they should make a LIVABLE wage,) partly because of unions, these people who stand on a factory line and pretty much do a SIMPLE activity that doesn't require much brain work, they still think they should earn $ 18.00-$30.00 an hour !! PLEASE ! There are many many people who would be thrilled to work at a factory doing a very simple ( no-brainer) job and be happy with $9.00-$12.00 and hour. That is PLENTY.If you live alone and are single, you can live on that. If you are married, are a couple, and/or have a couple kids, YES, your partner has to work also. You don't NEED a BIG BEAUTIFUL house, you DON'T NEED designer clothes, you DON'T NEED BRAND NEW VEHICLES ( SECOND HAND USED, BEAT UP ON THE BODY CARS WILL WORK JUST FINE,YOU DON'T NEED TO KEEP UP WITH THE Jones's. People say they need 2 incomes to keep up with the economy. NOT !. What they need is 2 incomes to buy all the newest and best Electronic "TOYS",the best/newest cell phones,new/best video games, newest/best new cars,clothes,houses,furniture,ect... Please stop it folks. You can buy a small house or (god forbid),lease an Apartment. Buy a used car with at least a basic warranty, try looking aroung Goodwill stores for clothes. You'd be surprised what people throw out. AND NO....you AREN'T Too Good to wear used clothes. ( Ever hear of a washing machine?)Get rid of all the Gold chains around the neck GUYS,it makes you look feminine, unless that is the look you are going for, in which case, buy inexpensive"fake"chains. And why do you NEED that jewelry when you are complaining you don't make enough money for everyday expenses. Speaking of everyday expenses, 1.)ever hear of a "brown bag lunch"? 2.)Walmart verses the Mall for clothing, shoes ect... 3.)used cars 4.)NO VIDEO GAME SYSTEM ( I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE HOW MANY SO CALLED ADULTS ARE ADDICTED TO THOSE THINGS....THEY USED TO BE TOYS....FOR CHILDREN (MINUS ALL THE VIOLENCE AND NUDITY) 5.)small apartments instead of a house you will never be able to afford but want your neighbors to THINK you can 6.)USE coupons when grocery shopping---we do and save approx.30-40% everytime we shop for food!Yes indeed, try COUPONS, they are these little pieces of paper with monetary discounts printed on them,( maybe during your life you've seen one or two, or have seen the person in line ahead of you using them)7.) Spend some QUALITY time with your kids. Take them to a PUBLIC swimming pool.Take them to a park and play ball or frisbee or with squirt guns ( all cheap)instead of paying 40 bucks a person to enter the gate of SIX FLAGS..then while there, paying 5 bucks per hot dog,4.50 a soda, and don't forget the french fries or nachoes, appox. $4.00-$7.00 each. 8.)going to the movies should be a TREAT, not a privelage. So go once every 8 weeks AS a PRIVELAGE, not a god given right. Just for one person, figure 10 bucks for the movie ticket, and 6 bucks for your SUPER-SIZE drink, 8-10 bucks for pop corn, and if you want to buy candy while there....you can relate that to just throwing your money in a trash can.Men-throw a candy bar in your top pocket,women-take a big purse-need I say more? 9.) Use pre-paid cell phones for emergencies ONLY, not to call your husband the second you pull out of the driveway to ask him "is your favorite color blue or green- I forgot again?" Kepp pre-paid cell in car for only emergencies, like breaking down, flat tire,accident,ect.. NOT to CHAT with you family/friends while you drive. Quit feeling like you are sooo special that the rest of the world CAN'T GET ALONG WITHOUT YOU WHILE YOU DRIVE 3 BLOCKS TO KROGER OR TO PICK one of your knds up from school.AND #10.) CELL PHONES AGAIN !!!!! iF i HAD A QUARTER FOR EVERYTIME SOMEONE ALMOST HIT ME WITH THEIR CAR BECAUSE THEY ARE TALKING ON THEIR CELL PHONE AND NOT PAYING ATTENTION.......I could quit my regular job and go into business teaching people how to live within their means. All the FUN doesn't have to be gone. Use your brain. Once a year SAVE UP some money and BUY that gadget you can't live without. I once heard a very intelligent person say about how he was sick and tired of children inparticular saying..."I'M BORED" ! hE said Use Your Brain, its an amazing thing. You stop, You think, and before you know it, you have thought of something to do with your time. Even something fun. Play cards, listen to the radio and dance, ( toddlers love this), That person I'm talking about probably would have hurt alot of "feelings" here, but he said anyone who's brain is working at least 10 percent....would never be bored. Your brain would always be able "think" of something to do. Back to the radioactive waste in other countries....like I said, forget about them caring about it, try to help open factories here, make sure the would be owners/managers know that you are willing to work for a LOW wage. Before you know it...you'll have a job, be driving a used car, wearing nice looking used clothing, and you'll still have a little money in your pocket. -----You'll see me by the knick name my Grandpa gave me years ago. Have a good day, get your head out of the clouds.....and accept who you are, where you work, and what you HAVE. Its much more flattering thanrolling around the floor, having a tantrum...because you can't go buy a new HUMMER, or any of the latest "Gadgets". Just USE YOUR BRAIN, and be Happy. :)

I already posted a comment, then went back to read the reast. MY GOSH ! To : John Pennel--have you ever heard of a punctuation? And to Kenneth C. Sun --please just stop posting ! You are probably old enough that it is useless to tell you to learn how to spell, learn how to use punctuation, and learn sentence structure. It was a real pain in the buttocks to try and read and understand what you wrote. I know....here where you post a message/responce spelling, and grammer aren't the most important thing. But it would be nice to be able to read the posts, without having to RE-READ every other line, in order to understand the point you're trying to make. Thanks for trying harder....for those of you who WILL try harder to write a post that makes sense, and doesn't cause "brain freeze" to those of us who try to make head or tails of what certain people wrote. Thank-you !! Audrey

Let's try that again... my computer has a mind of its own sometimes, and submits before I give it permission : ) Anyhoo, back to the subject at hand... As I was beginning to say, several years back, Wal Mart attempted to sell only Made in USA products, and it nearly took them down. The costs skyrocketed in comparison to what people could go to the nearest Dollar Store and other national chains and purchase, and they found Americans, themselves, would rather pay the low cost than support our own country. There are still many products on their shelves made here, but its unfortunate our safety is at risk, at the hands of other countries, and no one is accountable...

I think that we may have to wait a moment and think for a moment. The writer of the article sure has not or is trying to draw attention to his article through scare tactics. Everything on this earth gives off radiation, including your children and your dog. The real question here which the writer doesn't even attempt to answer is what level of radiation is being given off. And contrary to his statements or his lack of an attempt to find out, the government does have standards of what radiation levels are harmful and what are not. That why they supply radiation detectors that indicate how many rems of radiation a person has received that works in a dangerous environment. I think that this writer is either extremely dumb or is trying to sale sizzle.

DON'T BUY ANYTHING MADE IN CHINA! People forget that the Chinese (on the mainland where most of these products come from) are Communists. They don't care if we live or die. Boycott China now! And boycott the big companies that carry a huge percentage of their products (like Wal-Mart, in which only about 17 percent of their items are American-made.)

I have the same question, which cheese graters and microplane graters are radioactive? This IS about greed for a hand full of people within American companies who lobbied for deregulation a long time ago. This is the fault of both parties in congress who allowed this to happen. Not sure if we can ever go back and rebuild the manufacturing base. Sadly it will never be the way it used to be, the flood gates have been opened. Mayeb think twice before you purchase from the likes of Wal-Mart, they are a major contributer to this mess, they are responsible to the closure of many US manufacturing plants due to the fact they couldn't compete against foreign companies that could make the junk cheaper. Protest with your wallet, I know it's hard to do with such things as toasters, etc. but do what you can to make a difference.

Ecologic, economic, sociologic disaster! Yes ma73_chickens_rdead, we do need to think and have the ability to analyze what we read, but that doesn't seem to be a skill that we emphasize any more. Yes, we need to stop shipping trash around the world. We need to produce and dispose of our products locally. If you are really concerned get involved with writing letters to our local and national politicians. Attend planning and zoning meetings. Don't support the industries that create junk.
