The radioactive cheese grater

As if we didn't have enough to worry about with lead, Bisphenol A, phthalates, pesticides and mercury, now, a new investigation finds that many common products are radioactive -- even one cheese grater.

A must-read Scripps News investigation found that radioactive waste is being mixed with other metals in scrap yards and recycling facilities, often overseas, and then shipped into the U.S. in a range of consumer products.

The Daily Green urges readers to check out the whole report, but below are the chief findings:

  • Imports aren't checked for radioactivity: The U.S. has no regulations specifying how much radioactivity is acceptable, and U.S. agents don't screen cargo containers entering the U.S.

  • Radioactive materials contaminate U.S. scrap: U.S. metal recyclers and scrap yards aren't required to test or report the presence of radioactive waste, and there is a strong financial incentive for facilities to dump them or mix them in with clean products, since the cost of proper disposal is steep. Facilities in 36 states currently have no option for properly disposing of radioactive waste. A U.S. program designed to collect the most radioactive waste has a "two-year waiting list and a 9,000-item backlog."

  • The scale of the problem or health risk isn't known: No federal agency is responsible for testing, tracking or reporting the presence of radioactivity in consumer goods or raw materials.

Worse, there's very little consumers can do to protect themselves, according to the report. While exposure to low-level radioactivity is a fact of life, there's a scientific debate about the medical implications for chronic low-level exposure, and there's no telling whether or not some common products are delivering doses high enough to cause acute health issues.

This is a "tip of the iceberg" story we'll have to watch.

This is sickening and depressing, as if we don't already have enough to deal with worrying about air quality, water quality, what's in our food, what's in paint and also what's in the toys our children play with! Now we find out that we get to deal with radioactive waste. It's time to put down a strong foot and get rid of this crap!!! I read warnings on common hoses and tools that state, "please use caution or protection when using since this product contains chemicals known to cause cancer". Hell, in places you get a fine for littering on the road, here it is $500. If it's not one thing then it's another! I say to ship the crap back where it came from and keep our products clean, we already pay more for everything and we have a right to know about these things.

How do you regulate greed? Obviously there's a profit motive in every instance where some manufacturer somewhere manages to make something a little cheaper using materials that should be consigned to a hazardous waste dump somewhere. Surprise, surprise... somebody making money on waste disposal and manufacturing at the same time.

It makes me wonder truely about the security of our nation? That is one way that these other nations have been able to breach our security. Question then our countries policy to manufacture products outside our border. And I agree with the donr1953 ship the trash back from where it came and let these countries kill themselves with there own poorly made products. I hardly find products Made in the USA on my store shelves. So that is something to think about as to why this nation has failed to support it's citizens with education and employment. If a company is based in this nation, then the product should be manufactured in this nation instead of over seas using slave or child labor to produce products to be sent to the USA allowing these countries to place contaminated materials into products being manfactured for this country. Bring manufacturing back to America!

Why don't we start making our own products here in America again, that would solve a lot of problems on a lot of fronts.

And we wonder why so many people die of non-smoking related cancer each year in the United States. I think we just found a major cause.

it seems that most of the response to this article did not catch that the 39 places in the us does not and still on hazzerdas waste disposal list that the scrap meatal from the us is contaimanated and sold over seas.you can protect your self buy purchasing a small radio wave devise used to check microwave oven doors for leaks but you will be shocked to know that even the marble head stones at arlington cematary puts out radiation detectable from space satilites or you can purchase a little tag that will change colors if your to close to radiation shocked is the word

Good Morning, Great conversation going here, thanks. Maybe its a good thing... the radioactivity could kill food borne pathogens. (Ok, weak attempt at humor) However, given the number of problems we have with products coming from overseas, we need more regulation on incoming foreign product. I will probably end up with more cost for consumer, but the trade off there is it should probably stimulate some domestic production. I know many of you have also posted this, but i agree with them

Well Thanks to NAFTA we now have another problem on our hands! Want to stop NAFTA? Look at the label if it doesnt say Made in America or The USA on it put it back. 1 it will send a strong message to the retailer to stop buying this garbage and 2 it will keep a business alive here and their employees with jobs. Its hard at times to find items made here but they are out there and are worth the time it takes to find them. Look for that union label too. I lost pets to the pet food posioning and that woke me up. Dollar chains are a place to stay out of unless you need cleaning supplies. Those colorful summer products like serving wares cups and glasses our kids are drinking their Kool-Aid out of are made in another country. Gee wonder whats in those? Buy American support your friends and neighbors by keeping their jobs here in OUR COUNTRY!

I agree with Tina C. If its all about moeny and greed, then you can hit them where it hurts and stop giving them your money. When you need a new iron or toaster, you will have a difficult time finding one that is made in the US. However, what do you really NEED from a dollar store? I am willing to be that everything in dollar stores comes from overseas. It doesn't take much time to turn a product over to see where its made!

It,s sad to say finding things MADE IN USA is like going on an egg hunt. How do you fire your banker? This is the real problem. We the citizens of this country are having to fight a war of survival on this border while troops are fighting in another JUST NOT RIGHT AGREE TRY TO STOP BUYING IMPORTS I know it is hard and now with jobs lost they really have a hold on us, wallet and health .

HELLO! Which cheese grater has the radioactive particles in it? The article never gave a name brand. It did have a picture of Microplane grater. I use Microplane graters all the time. Just wondering if I need to discard in hazardous waste????
